Labor Day may be known today for long weekends, neighborhood barbecues, and the unofficial close of summer—but at its heart, it’s a celebration of the people whose effort and determination shaped the world we live in.
The idea for this holiday began in the late 19th century, a time when many workers—men, women, and even children—spent 10 to 12 hours a day in crowded factories or sweltering workshops, six days a week.
Labor organizations across North America pushed for fair pay, safer conditions, and the now-standard eight-hour workday. In 1882, New York City hosted the first Labor Day parade, drawing thousands of marchers who took an unpaid day off to make their voices heard. Twelve years later, in 1894, the first Monday in September was officially recognized as a national holiday in the U.S., with Canada following soon after.
Over time, what began as a bold stand for justice evolved into a national tradition—a yearly reminder that progress comes from perseverance, and that our collective quality of life rests on the shoulders of those willing to work for it.
In that same spirit, I believe that the work we do today—whether in our careers, families, or communities—can create a better future for the people around us.
This month, I want to pause from real estate and highlight something close to my heart—the incredible work of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the story of one of our nation’s heroes, U.S. Army Master Sergeant Luis Morales.
On August 21st, in Stafford, Virginia, MSG Morales and his family were welcomed into their mortgage-free smart home, a gift from Tunnel to Towers.
Luis’ journey is nothing short of inspiring.
Growing up near Fort Bragg, he was drawn to the challenge of becoming an Airborne Ranger.
He enlisted in the Army in 1996, and through grit and determination, he graduated from Ranger and Jumpmaster schools, then earned the Green Beret after completing the Special Forces Qualification Course.
In 2008, during the infamous Battle of Shok Valley in Afghanistan, his unit came under heavy fire. While aiding a teammate, Luis was shot twice. Every member of his team earned the Silver Star that day.
After two years of surgeries to try and save his leg, Luis made the difficult decision to undergo amputation below the knee. But instead of letting that injury define him, he pressed forward—serving six more years in the Army before retiring with 20 years of service.
What inspires me most is what came next. Luis became a para-triathlete, completing 35 triathlons, finishing the Boston Marathon on a handcycle just months after his amputation, and staying active in the Veteran Golfers Association. He’s a husband, a father of three, and a man who continues to lead by example.
The Morales family had already taken steps to adapt their home for Luis’ needs. But thanks to Tunnel to Towers, their mortgage was completely paid off. That gift lifted a huge financial burden and gave them lasting peace of mind.
As Luis put it:
“Their commitment to honoring and caring for service members and their families has not only alleviated financial burdens but also provided a sense of security and gratitude that we didn’t expect.”
The Smart Home Program builds and customizes homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. These homes come with smart technology for day-to-day independence—controlling lights, thermostats, and security systems right from an app. Each one even has a generator to ensure families are never left without power.
Stories like MSG Morales’ remind us why I’m so proud to support Tunnel to Towers through my business and mission.
Every home we sell doesn’t just help a local family—it helps us contribute to heroes like Luis, who have given so much for our freedom.

I worked in local law enforcement for over 25 years as a member of both the Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a Sergeant.
Unfortunately, more than a few of my friends and co-workers lost their lives in the line of duty. I witnessed firsthand the dangers of serving and protecting our community and how devastating it can be for families left behind.
One of our deputies was killed in the line of duty on July 25, 2021, during a standoff in Wasco, CA. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation stepped in and paid off the mortgage on his family’s home.
That’s why I proudly support their Fallen First Responder Program, Gold Star Family Home Program, and Smart Home Program.
We strongly believe that the more you give, the more you receive.
